CHAPTER FIVE

WEIRD JUST KEEPS GETTING WEIRDER

Jumping into my car, and kicking it into life, I stared out of the window, beyond the marching dead. The drinkers at the Heartlands Inn, barkeep and all, had filed out onto the sidewalk, watching me drive away like the fucking Hills Have Eyes Redux.

This is the last time I’m letting myself get blackmailed and threatened with the FBI, let me tell you, and accepting jobs from teenagers on the verge of tears who remind me a little too much of me and talk about a job in the middle of nowhere.

No fucking more.

But who am I kidding? If there’s even an inkling my friends are in trouble, I’m acting, even without the threat of the Feds or the tears of teenagers who remind me a little too much of me.

Anyway, I just left Chevron. Straight up floored the Mustang and headed straight outta town without going back, just as White Suit said. No going back for me. Forward is best, right? I thought about stopping somewhere along the road for some shuteye, but one glance out of the window told me all I needed to know about the place.

Movie. One word. Four syllables. Music played by a banjo. Look, I don’t have to spell it out for you, do I?

Goes without saying, it doesn’t bode well for Whiskey Pete’s. Chevron’s remote and backwater enough but at least it’s found by GPS.

I thumb up the noise on Nirvana and drive on, the sky growing steadily darker, the asphalt frosty, so I slow it down a touch. I ain’t fucking dying for the second time out this way. Imagine getting stuck in a loop out here. Not that I will. I’d be Aware, eventually at least, and I’d get back to Haven even if I had to walk every step. Don’t think a ghost can get blisters.

I almost miss the turn off, which really doesn’t surprise me. About ten miles from Chevron, I see it. ‘Route Thirteen, Idaho’s Hidden Hinterlands’. Hidden. No shit. The road’s covered by overgrown trees and bushes.

At least this Whiskey Pete’s can’t be much further. White Suit said I was in for a drive to Devil’s Ladder, but it don’t look all that far on the map. Reckon I’ll have cocoa and cable TV well before 11pm. I make the turn, and head into the hidden fucking hinterlands of Idaho once more. Reunited with Route Thirteen again.

Lucky me.
